Hi, I am recently diagnosed with Rectal Cancer. I have had CT, MRI and Rectal Ultrasound. I had my first consultation with a Surgeon on Thursday by telephone after he had been to a MDT meeting and he suggested that the tumour was T1/T2 and that he could remove it anally. However, he suggested that I have the Rectal Ultrasound to confirm T1 or T2. I had this on Friday and it was a long scan with 2 radiologist specialists looking and a surgeon called in to look. It was confirmed a T2 close to sphincter muscle and it now seems that it is unlikely the anal removal will be possible and that I will need full removal of anus and rectum with a permanent colostomy. Has anyone on here had any experience or advice about which surgery to go for if given the choice?

  • Hi BobM

I just wanted to say hello to you although I am a LAR with an Ileostomy. If you click on names you can read their bios

Katz51 is a very good one for you to read.

It’s all a shock to begin with but the good news is they’re going to get rid of that Cancer.

Theres lots of people here that have had the same operation as you and they will be able to give you some great support and advice. Please stay away from Google. It’s not relevant

  • Hi BobM, Yes, I have been through this. I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer in June 2019. I had to have a permanent stoma and eventually had a big operation to remove the anus and rectum and part of the colon and plastic surgery to replace the levator muscles in the pelvis. It was challenging but am pleased to say I have made a full recovery and enjoying life again doing just about everything I used to do before my diagnosis. The stoma is something you get used to- not ideal, but not as bad as you think its going to be. Check out my profile for a more detailed explanation of my journey. I am having my 3 year scan to check if I am still clear this week. Good luck with it all. It may seem daunting now but there is lots that can be done these days. Sean
