Hi, I am new, it’s been a very emotional few weeks after recently being told that a polyp which I had removed during a colonoscopy was cancerous.  I’ve had a CT scan which I’m happy to say is clear but on my follow up with the surgeon he advised the MDT were divided on what to do and I need to decide if I want to have surgery or not.  Evidently there is a small chance (1 in 30) that it has gone to my lymph nodes but unless I have surgery they won’t know for certain.  I am so grateful that the cancer is in its early stages but I’m not sure how I make this decision…

  • It is hard isnt it and at the end of the day its your decision as to what you are happy with.

Maybe asking for some more information as to what the surgery would actually entail would help with your decision

I personally didnt have much choice and was happy to throw everything at that cancer so that in future there would be no what ifs or regrets.

Im sure whatever you decide will be the right thing for you.

Why not click on some peoples names on here to read some bios and see how they got on

    All the best

  • Hi, , welcome to the club no one wants to join!! This is a tough time for you, and a difficult decision. I suggest you ask what the surgery would entail, then you know what you are letting yourself in for. If they are just removing lymph nodes around the area, or if it is more extensive. Keyhole or open.  Or is a short course of chemo another option? To some extent it will depend on where the polyp was. If it was rectal, or I guess caecum, which are within the pelvis, then that is more contained and possibly easier to spread. Try your allocated nurse for information. I think you need more info to make a choice. Then you know you've made the best decision. Take care

  • Hi Gemmary, thanks so much for your reply and advise, I saw my consultant yesterday and had a list of questions so I am feeling more informed.  Thank you so much

  • Thanks Kath for your reply, I have been doing lots of reading and after speaking to my consultant yesterday I feel more informed to be able to make the right decision.  Thanks again

  • That's good! Don't forget someone is always around if you need to ask questions in the future. Take care
