Rectal cancer

Hi I'm Sharon

I have been diagnosed with rectal cancer. At the beginning of the year I thought I was suffering with piles but was sent for a colonoscopy and they found a tumour in my rectum. Further scans have shown further signs in my lymph nodes in my pelvis, thankfully nowhere else. I am now waiting to hear if this will mean chemo pills with the radiotherapy or full chemotherapy.  Once the tumour has been shrunk enough I will have the operation to remove the tumor, close my bottom and have a stoma.

  • Hi Sharon,

    Firstly welcome.

You will find everybody on here are friendly and helpful. Feel free to talk about your feelings and fears and we will try and help. We have/are going through the same emotions and experiences.

My experience is very similar to yours except I've had the operation and now have a stoma. I think if you click on our names you will see what we've written to describe our experiences or feel free to ask anything.

Just remember Sharon you are not alone and no matter how scared you feel inside you can do this. Believe me I know!! lol

There are also nurses on here you can talk to who can answer more medical questions.

    Take care and write again.

  • Hi Sharon,

A warm welcome to the forum from me, but so sorry you find yourself here. This is a wonderful forum and I’m so glad you’ve found us.

Most people agree this is the worst part and very scary (waiting for your treatment plan) – once you get this you will feel better, honestly, even though it’s difficult to imagine at the moment.

There’s so much support and advice on here you’ll almost always find someone who has been there and done/had that. If you click on the icon at the side of the persons name it’ll take you to their bio if they’ve written one.

In the meantime ask anything you want there are lots of very knowledgeable people here.

    Take Care,
    Net x

  • Hi Sharon,

    Welcome to the group.

I had the same operation this time last year as you are facing, not for rectal cancer per se, but the treatment outcome was the same.

It's a tough ride, as you'll probably have worked out, but on here you'll always find someone to answer your questions or offer advice based on their experience, whether it's about the treatment or the emotional journey you're on. I certainly found it immensely helpful at different stages and for different reasons as I was going through the process and through my recovery. It made me feel so less alone, especially through the pandemic. It has been a real lifeline for me.

So keep in touch and ask anything - someone will always answer.

I wish you all the best for your treatment and recovery.
