Anyone had change to chemo plan when new disease pops up?

Hi, I am currently on capox and following 3 month scan new peritoneal disease has popped up which has resulted in not having a liver resection as planned, came as such a shock i didn’t ask much at time. I have been told will carry on and have 8 cycles of capox but now thinking should I be questioning this if I have had something new whilst on it. Just wondered if any one else has experienced this. Thank you

This is the clinical guidelines from NICE and at the very bottom of it it has links to all the additional biological agents and when it’s appropriate to introduce them .

To interpret this you will probably need some information on your cell type . Your Gp will have this if you don’t want to go through the hospital . If it was my relative I would want to know from the oncologist if it’s regarded as disease progression whilst on chemo and should other agents be added at this juncture . They may have a clinical reason for maintaining this line of treatment . My mum staged on the same chemo as they classed her as responsive to it despite a recurrence when she was off it . But you might like to ask if you were responding and if not what are the benefits at this juncture of staying on treatment . They may well have a reason but you need to know .

  • Thank you Court, that has really helped to put in to some perspective, feel my head is all over the place at the moment and it’s difficult to focus properly.  Take care, J

  • To be honest it was the same question that popped into my mind when I read your post and if your oncologist has not explained that aspect of  their decision I think it’s really relevant and important . Not only does it help you understand your treatment plan but also allows you to be more informed .
It is very overwhelming but don’t underestimate your abilities either . You got straight to the heart of the matter and it took me about a year to get to that point ,

Takes a wee while to start feeling confident to ask these questions but it is well worth it as understanding is everything .

Sometimes  consultations head down a different route and the moment passes so they are well used to coming back and readdressing your concerns . Even if it’s through the clinical team at your next chemo appointment . Write it down and hand it over to them . That way you have also given yourself a way forward to asking this and a solution on how to do it .

    It’s a big system to navigate .

    Your doing great .

  • Hi mine is a very similar story. Went down for a liver resection following surgery for bowel cancer but they found peritoneal tumours so didn’t continue with the resection and just closed me up. I was also on Capox for 6 cycles but scans revealed the the peritoneal tumours had not shrunk so they have changed me to Irinotecan IV and continue with oral capecitabine for another 6 cycles and then get some more CT scans to see what is happening.

  • Hi, thank you for sharing your experience and am so so sorry to hear your liver op didn’t go ahead. I wish you all the very best with your current treatment and scans to come
