I am only three weeks from finishing radiotherapy for breast cancer. Today I'm hit with my husband being diagnosed with Colon cancer which I had suspected was going to be the case. What I dint suspect was that it would have spread to his liver and lungs.

He is due to have colonscopy on Friday which was already booked due to symptoms, now it will be to do biopsy.

He is 77 in April has lost over 5st since Xmas as hardly been able to eat for the last few weeks.  He only became really ill in the last couple of weeks. He is now totally yellow and they have said he is very anemic. My head is all over the place as I can't see a good outcome.

  • Hi ,

Welcome to the forum . You and your husband have had a tough time so I hope we can support you as you navigate this difficult situation .
It is easy to become anaemic with bowel cancer as it can bleed a lot but they will hopefully look at assisting him with that and some people here like  had transfusions before starting chemo .

It really depends on the extent of the spread in the lung and liver . My mum has had both but responded to chemotherapy and that can used in a maintenance setting .

Has he managed to have a chat with the oncologist yet to see about a treatment plan ? Bowel cancer has many different chemotherapy options if he is well enough to have them . They generally try and stabilise the bleeding etc but some people do go onto have treatment .

Our helpline nurses would be happy to chat this through with you on 0808 808 0000

The difficult part just now is having some information without the full treatment plan .

Its totally understandable that you feel frightened but hope you can get a good chat with his oncologist/surgical team soon .

  • Thanks Court, he had an iron infusion while in hospital and is booked for another one next week. Colonscopy due today was cancelled as deemed to severe. Tumour in the colon is partially blocking his bowel. Going to do a needle biopsy on liver, awaiting an appointment.  My worry is he's hardly able to eat as feels or is sick, even the smell of food turns his stomach. Can't face most foods. So losing more weight, no energy etc which in turn means he won't be fit enough for any suggested treatments.

  • Hi ,

I actually found the lack of appetite one of the hardest part to manage and I completely understand your concern !

One thing my mum was able to slowly take a sip at a time was a milk shake which we loaded up with calories . She would only manage a few sips at a time but doing so frequently helped a lot ! She was only just able to drink a complan chicken soup but at least we knew some nutrients were going in .

That was a shame the colonoscopy was not possible but hopefully the liver biopsy will give them the information regarding the cell type .

It sounds as though they are trying to get him to treatment . It’s such a worry and I am thinking of you both .

    Take care ,
