Hi, following an NHS Bowel Screening test in September 2021 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

I had a colonoscopy and was told I had a sigmoid tumour about 3cm big. I was later sent for CT scans to see if the cancer was anywhere else. Fortunately not!
I was booked in for surgery for 15th December.

Unfortunately I was taken in on 5th December as I had a blockage. They tried to insert a stent but this was unsuccessful and so I had an ileostomy fitted.

I recently had another CT scan and was hoping to hear today for feedback. Unfortunately my scan hadn’t been reported and so wasn’t available for my consultant to review! I’ll have to wait until next Tuesday for the review.

My surgery is booked for mid February to have the tumour removed. The healing process will then start over again.

The last few weeks have been really traumatic, not only coming to terms with having cancer but living with a stoma.

Anyone else out there struggling?

I will be forever grateful to the NHS Bowel Screening Programme.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board from me. How disappointing that your surgery couldn’t go ahead as planned but good news that there is no spread and hopefully your scan will be back for next Tuesday. It is a shock to be diagnosed especially if you’ve not had any symptoms but bowel cancer is very treatable especially if caught early.
Have they said that they’ll be able to reverse your stoma once your treatment is finished? There’s loads of support on here and you may want to post/have a look on the Ileostomy and Stoma board too?

We’re all at different stages of treatment/recovery but happy to help and support you through this.
    Take care
