Hello.

Hoping to find answers and support on here.

My mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer last month and 2 days before Xmas we saw the consultant about her options.  Because of her age and other health issues an operation is a highly risky one. Therefore she is very reluctant to have the op and recovery could change her way of life for the worse.

The consultant said it will spread within a year but didn't really say what her life would be like after that or how long.

I realise this is a difficult question to answer but it's still part of the decision making process

It would be nice to hear from others on here that are going through the parent scenario as well

Thanks for reading

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. It sounds like a difficult decision to make and hard for someone on here to advise without knowing more about your mums background. Have you thought about ringing the nurses on here for a chat? If your mum is unable to have the operation then they may have some advice as what to expect when the cancer progresses. The number is 0808 808 00 00 and they’re available 7 days a week from 8-8. I’m also going to tag  and  who may be able to offer you some advice?

    Take care

Thank you. I will call in new year

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . This is such a hard decision and does require all the information to be available to make it and that includes how the disease progresses.

My mum had a spread at diagnosis so for her it was a primary in the bowel and a spread to her liver . They told us her bowel would have been unlikely to have become the problem due to the way it was spreading but her liver would have become symptomatic quicker .

Bowel cancer has a pattern of spread to the liver and lungs . However I would say you need more information on the primary tumour . Is it likely to cause a bowel blockage and if so how would they manage it ? Would it require emergency surgery and if so what is better to have planned surgery or emergency surgery ? Is there a need for a stent ? There is a lot to weigh up .
Bowel cancer can be quite slow growing if it’s contained in the bowel so time scales are hard .
I would definitely speak to the helpline team and get their advice . There is also a section for you to ask nurses .

These are just some questions that sprang to my mind when we were helping my mum at the beginning.
