Hi. I'm new here. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer a few weeks ago and was given to think there would be a small operation and that would be that. Of course this could be what I wanted to hear. Yesterday I was told that I have 2 tumours, stage 2-3, and the cancer was aggressive. I was also told that because of pre existing health problems that there was an extremely hi risk that I would die on the op table or soon after. My other choice was not to do anything and let nature take it's course.
To say I was shocked would be an understatement.
Hi
Welcome to the forum . I am very sorry that you have found yourself with such a difficult choice . However I am going to tag in Leb17 as her mum found herself in a similar situation but when they got more information on the percentages of the risks they were talking about , it gave them more direction and a bit of light on the situation .
You are also entitled to a second opinion and sometimes it really is beneficial to hear what someone else either thinks clinically or how they would approach it . You might like to ask to speak your concerns over with the anaesthetist who could potentially give you more information on the risks . My mum had a difficult choice to make too . The other aspect you might like to speak to the surgeon about . If your tumour blocked in the bowel would you require to have emergency surgery and if that was a possibility would it be more beneficial to have it as a planned surgery and how would they manage it if it did block .
Whilst you have been given some information there is definitely some other aspects of it was my relative I would want more information on .
We are hear to support you as you navigate through these difficult aspects . Additionally we have a helpline 0808 808 0000 who would be happy to discuss any aspect .
Take care ,

Hi Myfamily1 because I’m high risk I opted for chemo tablets and radiation for 5 week days for 5 weeks. I did get a complete response but unfortunately I got a dot on my liver which again too high risk for surgery so I’m had radiofrequancy ablation. Unfortunately again at a follow up colonoscopy the tumour had grown back. This time I had surgery, I have a extremely large incisional hernia in my upper stomach but this time I was operated on. I was told that it took six hours that was on the table, and at first they didn’t think they could do it then they didn’t think I would survive. They could not do the hernia at the same time it is too big. I was told I had different people in and out all day. Not only did he do it mostly keyhole with just a cut on the bikini line he also joined me together because of the hernia he didn’t think I could cope with a bag. I was marked up for one. I feel like my recovery is slow and I’m down for chemo next year. Sorry I’ve gone on but I would ask if there are other options. Sending best wishes xx
Hi my family 1
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis,
And hope you can find the right choice for you,
But if it were me I would go for the op, I hope you don't mind me saying if you die in the surgery, you were going to go anyway, I hope that doesn't sound callus I don't mean to be,
I have had so much surgery threw my life and been told all sorts, but I always say I won't go without trying,
I hope this helps and again I don't mean any harm by what I say, xx
Hi
I was diagnosed with bowel cancer last month I was rushed into a and e with a blocked bowel and was told the only option was surgery and they said there was a probability I would not make it through the operation as I have a BMI over 40 or I could do nothing and die within 2 weeks.
I had no option other than the surgery. Well I did make it through the surgery and recovering well. I have lost nearly 4 stone in weight and I feel good.
Have my first meeting with my oncologist this week to discuss treatment
It's a scarey time for you talk to your medical team seek support from your friends and family. The members on this site are amazing. Stay away from 'dr google' otherwise you will be spending hours worrying when there has been no need too.
Stay strong

Hi my mum was in the same situation and we was told if she did have a blockage they would have to do a emergency operation anyway and if it couldn't be done it would be just end of life care.. we went back to see her consultant last week and that's when we were told about the blockage operation. Not everyone will have that, bit it is a possibility.. my mum decided to go with the operation and we had a letter yesterday she's going in on the 30th of December and pre op next week. They've said she will be under for 3 hours it would of been keyhole but it will be open for mum cause she has a big scar on her belly. They said she will be in 4 to 7 days and she will be up and walking next day after the operation all being well. Only one person can go and visit and we have decided it will be my stepdad.. yes we are nervous but hopefully it will all work out for the best... good luck in whatever you decide but here if you need to talk x
Oh this is so unbelievably hard. I’m glad so many have offered advice. I don’t know how people get through such scary risks. My husband had a 5 percent chance of not making it through the operation. To me it was obvious he had to do it, because he had a zero percent chance of making it through the year without the operation. Still it was a big choice and he decided to do it and it was very scary for both of us, and I know those are actually pretty good odds. He did the surgery and is great now. Last month I had only minor surgery with very minimal risk and nevertheless I was panicking about not waking up. And it really brought home to me how scary this can be that no one will understand who hasn’t been there. I’m sending you all the prayers and courage I can.
