Hello Wave I’m 42 and have bowel cancer , I never thought those words would of ever come out of my mouth . I’m having  surgery to remove my sigmoid tomorrow, things are moving very fast and I will only find out what stage the cancer is when it’s removed . Just wanted to say hello to you lovely people who know how I feel , crapping them at the moment mentality ( and physically = stool softeners )  There is a lot of big words flying about and I’m finding it a bit overwhelming is that normal ?

  • Hi good luck with the surgery I had the same operation in jan wasn't too bad once the pain was sorted out.

It is certainly overwhelming but you will soon get use to the language.

I've just been given the all clear so keep positive

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the board from me. Yes it is overwhelming especially as it’s not a cancer that’s talked about a lot so you tend not to know much about it?The good news is that it’s very treatable nowadays and there’s lots of people on here who will help and support you through it. Stay away from google! You can ask anything you like on here - there is nothing too daft or embarrassing! I’ve attached a link to a booklet below about the operation - it’s a bit daunting but you’ll be well looked after and this is the sort of operation that the surgeons do day in day out.

Hope all goes well tomorrow and please update us when you can?

    Take care

Welcome! My husband has a sigmoidoctomy (or whatever it’s called Grinning) and a hemicolectomy 12 weeks ago. It’s a scary time but the best thing is that it’s been caught! Hope the surgery goes smoothly!

  • Thank you for your kind words and the pdf link ,it’s very helpful xx

  • Thank you and hope your husband is recovering well xx

  • i know exactually how you feel, i had hemicolectomy jist over 3 weeks ago and diagnosis was bolt out blue, so glad to have found this site it really helps hearing and sharing experiences, o start chemo next week another thing i would never have thought i’d have to deal with, good lucktomorrow please keep in touch and let us know how you are

  • Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts , good luck with your chemo xx

  • Hi,

welcome and good luck with the surgery. I’ve found these boards a great place to Keene from others and understand you’re not alone in this.

im in a similar situation to you. 38 man, no risk factors or family history. My tumour is technically a high rectal tumour but it’s probably only a few centimetres down river from yours!

There are many many people on here with more experience and knowledge than me. But what I’d confidently tell you is that it gets easier and less overwhelming. People here will help if they can and will point you in the direction of experts if they can’t.

good luck and keep us updated.
