Hello everyone. I have joined this group in order to attempt to support my family. My sister has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. She has had surgery to remove some, but not all. We are awaiting a decision as to whether she can go forward with chemotherapy.
We do not live close to the family and I am finding it difficult to obtain detailed information on her prognosis. She has 4 grown-up children the youngest being 19. I think my sister does not want to accept the diagnosis but her eldest child is doing all the research for diet, nutrition and care needs.
I am shocked she has been discharged without referral regarding diet, nutritional supplements. I am unclear as to how extensive the cancer is remaining. Any dietary advice please Her eldest child is pre-preparing meals so that the younger ones can just reheat them.
Thank you for any advice

Hi ,
Sorry to hear about your sister’s situation . It can take a while for people to come to terms with a cancer diagnosis but with time she will get there .
I have linked in two leaflets , one from Kings Cross hospital on the specific foods etc for post bowel cancer patients . Does she have a stoma ? That has some specific requirements. And a more general leaflet from Macmillan looking at all aspects of diet .
We also have a helpline 0808 808 0000 and the Macmillan nurses could assist getting more information.
In terms of treatment , people are referred back to the MDT meeting where they get their heads together to find the best treatment plan for your sister . If you click on my user name you will see my mum went straight to chemotherapy as she was inoperable. Chemo did a good job and bowel cancer is fortunate to have a lot of different options for people who need to gain stability and treat the cancer as a chronic condition .
Take care ,
Court
