Hi guys, i've just joined the forum, this is my first post. My name is Ramsay, i'm from Scotland, and i had my op 6 weeks ago, and although it was a success, i still face the prospect of going through chemotherapy, it starts on the 17th of this month, just in time for christmas, but i'd rather that than not have it at all, hopefully it will stop the dreaded big c coming back.

  • Welcome . A few of us Scott’s hanging around this board ! So pleased to hear you are safely through surgery . That’s great news .

This is a thread that other forum users have collected their chemotherapy tips . Might help to prepare and give you some insight .

You will hopefully be in your second week of chemotherapy for Christmas .

This is a blog on Food over Christmas for those celebrating. Might be worthwhile having a look . My mum had chemotherapy for two years and one infusion was the 22 nd of Dec . The other Christmas Eve . With a bit of manoeuvring we fitted it all in . But I would check with staff to see who to contact if any issues pop up as they normally have a skeleton staff covering . We still had lovely days but built in some rest periods so my mum could draw strength when required .
But you are right to get started . You have your future ahead of you and with a bit of forward planning you get there .

My mum was in for the long hall with treatment but the NHS Scotland took wonderful care of her . She managed to get discharged after 12 years last summer .

Ask anything you like and we will do our best to support you .

    Take care ,

  • Haha! i never thought to call both of them names, good idea calling it Nicola, i had my op at the royal alexandra hospital in paisley, and my chemo will be at the beatson in Glasgow, and no, i don't mind you asking.

  • Hi court, many thanks for the reply, i will look at the blogs you sent me links to tomorrow, as it's late, and i'm tired, tried to do to much today, so need some rest, only 6 weeks post op. Yes, i will be in week 2 of chemo at Christmas, but i will try to enjoy it as best i can, i am on my own, no family, i don't mind though, as i don't have to go through hell with all the cheesy movies lol, i can watch what i want. I will sign off for now, and go to bed, hope to hear from you soon.

  • Hi Ramsey

  • The Beatson is fantastic. Can’t praise the team enough . The consultants could not be better and the specialist nurses and support staff are kind and helpful . We are very , very fortunate to have them . Busy right enough especially their clinics but you get the feeling you matter .

Hope it goes well for you .

  • Hello, good to hear from you, i understand when you say the diagnosis has knocked you for six, i was the same, you never think it's going to happen to you, and when it does, it's like a bomb going off inside you. It seems to me that different health boards have different ideas on testing people, my case was very quick, from diagnosis to operation was a week, you will be feeling very weak at the moment, i hope the oncologist gets in touch, they are very good. but i would say that, i've seen mine. Whereabouts in south wales are you, i spent 3 very happy years in tenby, in pembrokeshire, and i loved it, wish i never left. Take it easy & look after yourself, talk later

  • Thank you court, they have been fantastic already, they put you at ease, and tell you everything that is going to happen. Can't say i'm looking forward to it, but i know it's for the best, take care.

  • Hi Ramsay

wow you were quick, my wait was the colonoscopy which took 6 weeks ( and that was private )

after the results i saw the consultant again private 10 days later, then the op ( private ) 2 weeks after.

i live in llanelli not too far from Tenby. it’s a lovely place isn’t it?

be good to share your journey

    take care for now

  • Hi , I think it might depend on what the chemo is. If just on weekly 5FU/la, then at week 2 you will be fine probably, as it tends to be cumulative. Any other chemo I don't know.
