Hi everyone. New to the group. I'm waiting to start chemo to help shrink a rectal tumour. Had a week's intensive radiotherapy. Too much time on my hands and beginning to overthink things. I'm worried about the side effects of my chemo, particularly the nerve damage. Any hints or tips for preparing for my first round, which is a week on Tuesday?
Hi and a warm welcome to the board. Do you know what chemo you’re having? I’ve attached a link to a post that we started about chemo that has lots of top tips. A lot of the side effects are caused by oxaliplatin and there are less if you are just on capecitabine? Wrap up warm for your appointment and take a scarf to cover your mouth with when going outside. Keep your hands and feet well moisturised - my nurses recommended Aveeno with Shea Butter which you can get in the supermarkets or Udderly Smooth cream which you can buy online.

There are lots of pills and potions to combat the side effects and sometimes it’s just a case of finding the right one for you. It’s worth keeping a diary too as it reminds you of the side effects and also you may find that a bit of a routine develops so you know that you might feel a bit grotty for the first few days after each session but then pick up towards the end so you can plan something nice for those days.
Hope this helps but feel free to post if there’s anything not covered that you’re worried about?
Take care
