Hi I was just wondering how everyone copes with chemo with a stoma. My husband now had a permanent stoma fitted and starts a new cycle of folfiri chemo tomoro..  we are aware it might upset his stomache and cause diarrhoea. How do you all cope with this with a stoma? Is it a cause of gettin the shower and just lettin it pass or? Any help or ideas would be amazing

Thankyou Jenny

  • Hi JymeBob, Jenny,

I had an ileostomy while I had three months of Capox. The oncologist offered me six months of a lower dose because of the possible effect on the output but I said I would manage it, which I did with loperamide. When it got too runny I would take two tablets half an hour before each meal. I don't know how folfiri works but if it involves a pill you don't want it passing through too quickly and not being absorbed.

I would think that your oncologist should advise you on this.  All the best to your husband for his treatment.

Hi John, ah yes he had loperamide with his folfox so maybe he’ll have that again. He didn’t have the stoma during that chemo. We’ll find out today he’s due in 10.15 . is your ileostomy to be reversed ? How are you coping with it? Simon was hoping for the ileostomy but they had to fit the permanent stoma. He’s coping really well with it , but this is thr first chemo with it. It’s an infusion over 48 hrs every 2 weeks for 3 months.
    thsnkyou for your reply

  • Hi Jenny, thank you for asking, my ileostomy was reversed a year ago and I am doing ok with the 'new normal'. I have an older friend of mine who has had a colostomy bag for twenty years and just treats it as normal now.  Glad to hear Simon is coping well with the bag, I hope he copes well with the Folfiri also.

    All the best, John
