Hello, My name is Tony,i am the husband of Kim (I am 61 years old and Kim is 59 ) She has just been diagnosed with bowel and lung cancer....We have been together for 36 years and are like one person...I rely on my wife so much as I have emphysema and intermittent claudication, which makes me very dependable....We went to my wife's GP just 2 days ago and he tells us Kim has a matter of months to live, with has absolutely devastated us...Kim has a very bad anxiety problem and being the unselfish woman she is, she is more worried about leaving me than worrying about herself.
The reason for this message is,Kim thinks I am going to need support from someone whilst she is going through this terrible disease...Even though she is asympomatic she is feeling very well and quite fit and healthy....She has not shown any signs at all, apart from losing 2 stone in weight, which she has done by not eating, due to Gall stones...Let me explain more: She was taken into hospital with a gallstone flare up, after spending a couple of days she was sent home...We was then given an appointment to see a consultant about taking her gall bladder out and at the consultation,i mentioned to the consultant that she had lost a lot of weight through not eating...The consultant then said he wanted her to go for CT scan with dye, to look into to it further....A week later, the hospital booked her in for a gall bladder removal procedure....10 minutes later we got a phone call saying it had been cancelled as the consultant had seen nodules on the lungs and thickening of the lower bowel...Anxiously we waited for confirmation from the consultant and he rang with the bad news....My Wife rang her GP and asked to go and see him and he confirmed the devastating news, even though he did say "don't tell anyone just yet" Now, what does that mean ?
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated and thank you very much for taking the time to read this.
Kind regards
Tony
Hi
Welcome to the forum ! I am Very sorry to read about your wives diagnosis! What a shock for you both .
https://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/about-bowel-cancer/our-publications/treating-advanced-bowel-cancer/
If you click on this link it will take you to a download on how bowel cancer that has spread can be managed !
Is your wife being referred to an oncologist? My mum has had a spread to the liver and lungs in the past ! It really depends on a few different factors. The extent of the spread and the location of the spread ! I would definitely wait on her consultation with the oncologist as some people actually respond quite well to chemotherapy and it’s not that unusual to see people still doing well on chemo years later .
However getting the right support round both of you is really important!
We have lots to share here from treatment experiences to the emotional aspects !
We have a helpline 0808 808 0000. They can guide through the medical aspects to the financial and emotional! They are also there for you both !
We have a carers forum that you might also find helpful !
We will certainly do our best to support you !
