Hi there. I was told by my GP that I had a positive bowel screening test result on Friday and have already been signed up for an emergency colonoscopy next week. It came as a big surprise because I don't have many symptoms (no blood for example). Has anyone received a cancer diagnosis after a colonoscopy with no bowel cancer symptoms?

  • Hi.

My husband had no symptoms. His was found after he had a routine blood test, and he was found to be anaemic. He had the operation a week last Friday and is still in hospital, hopefully not much longer!!!! .

  • Hi

The bowel can bleed for a variety of reasons like Diverticulitis and a few other conditions . Many people pass through here with similar issues and don’t end up with a cancer diagnosis. However your GP is doing exactly the right thing as it’s important to know the cause of any bleeding to get it treated .

Bowel cancer caught early is very treatable and we would be here to support you although Hopefully you won’t require it !

    Take care ,

I hope your husband is nearer to getting home. It must have been quite a shock to be diagnosed with bowel cancer having had no symptoms. I am really surprised that I had a positive result for the FIT bowel screening test. Have to hold out now until the 10th Nov when I have  my colonoscopy- the earliest I could get in. Please give your husband my best wishes for a quick and easy recove

Thanks Court. I've noticed you always give positive well thought out advice to people. Thank you for your understanding. I'm feeling quite low today - I just want to get the colonoscopy over with and find out my diagnosis (if I have one!). I've been in some pain today but not sure if it's "real" or not.

    Hi

My husband didn't have any symptoms either.  He had dental problems which required antibiotics and ibuprofen.  Both medications seemed to upset my husbands stomach so badly he lost 1 stone in weight.  Gastroscopy revealed he had inflammation of the upper GI tract.  That has now resolved with Omeprazole and careful diet.  During the checks, a large mid-rectal tumour was found on 15th August, but it's taken until now to obtain the cancer cells.  Treatment starts today.  My husband has regained the 1 stone in weight and feels great now that the upper GI tract is sorted and settled.  However, the tumour has no symptoms and didn't show on his stool test earlier this year.  We are lucky the dental problem has allowed this to be found before it became more serious than it already is.

If your positive bowel screen is from the stool test, a positive read can come from inflammation or many other reasons, not necessarily cancer.  Good luck, hope it's nothing too serious.

I'm glad your husband is feeling better. It's good all the tests he was having picked up the tumour. I'm quite sure my test result is a false positive as many people have given me details of other causes of bleeding in the bowel. Thank you for your reply :)
