Hi everyone, my sister in law had a oesophagectomy in 2008 and more recently,   a right hemicolectomy.

She is recovering well but still in pain. Is there anyone who has experienced both these ops please and how was their recovery.

Many thanks

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your sister recent diagnosis! How has she recovered from the hemicolectomy?
My mum had one but over twelve years ago now and after the initial recovery period she has managed very well !

How long ago was her surgery ! There was definitely initial pains , nerve endings etc but it is also important to check things out with her team if you are at all concerned about infection .

Our helpline staff might be able to chat this through with you on 0808 808 0000.

has some carers experience in dealing with two primaries. I wonder if she would be able to assist you !

    Take care ,

    Court

  • Hi dylly,

I began to reply to you, but then decided it wouldn't be much help! My husband had a laryngectomy 14 years ago and has just had a bowel operation last Friday. The stoma has just begun to work, so we are keeping fingers crossed. Although the larynx and oesophagus are in the same area of the body I would think the treatment is totally different.

I have learnt over the years to ask if you are not happy with things. Has she got a specialist nurse you could ask?

Thank you Court, she is now recovering well as it was just a week ago that she came home.  Still very tired and sleeping a lot but hospital say very pleased with her progress and all blood tests

have come back normal.  I will advise the helpline number suggested and encourage her to get in touch.  Your prompt reply Iis much appreciated.

    Kind reards

  • Quite glad you mentioned the sleeping. My husband (sounds like a week behind) says he thinks he will sleep for 3 days solid when he gets home!!!
