  • Hello Debsdelight

Good luck with your surgery, lots of us have had surgery and are with Stoma’s.
It’s really scary to start but this is a wonderful place to find advice and support.

My LAR was August 4th and I have a stoma. I’m getting back to going out for meals, visits and shopping.

    With very best wishes

  • Hello, it is a scary thought when they initially tell you they will give you stoma bag... when you wake up from surgery you will see it and I am sure you will realise like I have that you are still the same person as you were before. The nurses will give you all the training and support you need and they are brilliant and very caring. Having a stoma doesn't have to change your life that much, you can still do everything you did before and once you get to grips with what is tolerable or not food wise you will be ok. We are always here for help and advise or to talk to.. Believe me when I say you aren't alone and more people than you know live with stomas. Take care and hope your surgery goes well. xx

    Hi Debsdelight

I was devastated when I was told I would have to have a stoma, I couldn't even talk about it with my friends and family,  but I gradually accepted that this was part of the process of saving my life!  I had my surgery in mid august and although I found the first few weeks managing the stoma really quite tough, along with recovering from the op I found the advice and support I got through this forum extremely helpful.  2 months on and I am back at work and going out and about and out for meals albeit with a boring and restricted diet, but on the whole i'm amazed at how quickly you can adapt to living with a stoma  The hospital staff will help you manage your stoma after your surgery and you will have a specialist stoma nurse when you're discharged from hospital - they're brilliant!
