Hi all,
Firstly thank you for taking time to read my post. My father, 78, was diagnosed 6 weeks ago with colo-rectal cancer and since then it has been a bit of a rollercoaster journey as everything moved very quickly with, test, scans, appointments with consultants etc. He has been told he has an aggressive cancer and as such they want to operate. Within the month as they believe, I think, that if they move fast enough it will prevent more intrusive treatment down the line.
With this in mind he has began following the low fibre diet, given to him by the nurses, and taking lactulose everyday. He was still in lots of pain and unable to pass stools so the nurses told him to cut out all fibre. He is now wearing incontenance pants because his stools are so runny and due to the position of his tumour he has no control over them coming.
Yesterday was a particularly bad day for him as he spent most of the day and night either sat on the toilet or in the shower. As I’m sure you all know this is putting a huge strain on my mum, also 78, as well as upsetting for my poor dad.
Overnight he found after not eating at all yesterday that he is now passing mucus from his bottom with blood in. I have suggested he eat some low fibre such as potato and perhaps stop having lactulose every day however he is reluctant to go “against the rules” of what the hospital nurses have suggested. I would call the nurses but they only work Monday to Friday!
therefore my questions to anyone on here, please, are,
1. has anyone experienced the same and what if anything did you do that may have helped
2. should he be taking lactulose everyday?
I feel so very helpless and despite the nurses at the hospital saying they are there to help we all feel very alone.
any advice would be greatly received. Many thanks x
Hi
Welcome first and foremost ! And what a predicament you have been left to manage over the weekend !
It is a difficult one to navigate as I assume the problem is to prevent a blockage from happening before surgery !
I am wondering if our helpline staff could assist you with some guidance on 0808 808 0000.
I would also phone the NHS out of hours service to see what their guidance is as they may want to move this along if it’s become distressing !
Take care ,

Hi and I’m sorry to hear what a rotten time you’re all having. If the tumour is quite large then they will be concerned about stools not being able to get past it hence the low fibre diet. However it sounds like the addition of the lactulose is taking it to the other extreme. As Court suggests you could give the nurses on here a ring and see if halving the lactulose doseage would help maybe? Mucus is normal - it is produced to help the stools move smoothly through the bowel and the blood is probably from the tumour as all the excessive pooing will have aggravated it as it goes past it- even people with stomas (ie. bowel disconnected) find that they pass mucus.
Hope your dad has a better day
Take care

Kareno62 thank you so much for this. I read your message to mum and dad and they feel better knowing that it is not “abnormal”, as such, to experience the mucus and blood.
They are going to also take yours and courts advice and give the helpline a call and talk about the half dose of lactulose.
