Hi,

my 67 year old dad had a colonoscopy 2 weeks ago and the surgeon found a 4cm tumour which he said he is sure is cancerous. A ct scan was arranged which took place last week and we’re now awaiting the results with a face to face meeting having been arranged with the consultant on Tuesday this week to discuss the biopsy and ct scan results. When the nurse phoned to tell my dad about the appt she said she couldn’t discuss the results over the phone. Would she have been able to have advised us if the ct scan showed no spread? I’m going to the meeting with my dad on Tuesday and at the moment if it’s just the 4cm tumour then that will feel like a win.

  • Hello Kim85 and a warm welcome to the board, although sorry you find yourself here on behalf of your Dad.

I think this is normal practise as any information given would likely raise new questions (even if no spread) and the nurse would not be in a position to answer. I too had a colonoscopy in which they found a tumour and I was told there and then it was almost definitely cancerous. I wasn't given the full results of scans, biopsies etc until I had the face to face meeting even though no spread to other organs.

Nearly everyone agrees the waiting period your Dad is in at the moment is the worse time.  Once he get the results and a treatment plan in place things will feel much better - honestly.  There's plenty of people on here to support you & your Dad through this & help you out with any questions or concerns - don't worry about asking anything.  Hope the results are the best they can be and do come back and update us.

Sending you and your Dad my best wishes.

  • Hi . I’m not sure how much the nurses know but they don’t tend to discuss scan results at this stage - maybe because it would lead to further questions that they were unable to answer? I also had a 4cm tumour and was happy to learn that there was no spread - like you say it felt like a win even though I still had cancer!
The consultant will have looked at the results and discussed them at the weekly meeting with all the other consultants from the various fields and will have decided on a treatment plan.
Its a good idea to jot down a few questions and take a pen and paper with you. I’ve attached a link to a booklet which I was given by my support nurse and it’s good at explaining some of the terminology and staging etc.

    Take care
