Enlarged lymph node

Hi all I was diagnosed with colon cancer last July 2020 I had successful surgery.  They found cancer cells in one lymph node and I. started chemo but unfortunately I only had 1 round as I had lots of problems. I had yearly check up and the colonoscopy was clear but the scan showed one enlarged lymph node. The surgeon said he didn’t know what it was and said it was there before and has recommended a CT scan in 6 months to see if it has grown, if it hasn’t he is confident it isn’t anything to be concerned about . Has anybody had this problem?

  • Hi,

My mum has had a few “watchful waiting “ moments but limited to three months only !

It was not for a lymph node but they also at the end of the three months did a PET scan which showed uptake . She has had a few if these over the years and gives them another aspect to work with to see if it a met ! Then they were able to quickly attend to it . Three months she was comfortable with ! Did your consultant say why 6months ?
There can be a lot of different approaches with consultants !

  • Yes I agree 3 months is a better waiting time I presume if it was cancerous it wouldn’t have grown much

  • My mum’s mets grew at different speeds in different locations . The lungs can be slow growing and were  monitored over two years ! The liver area grew like mushrooms! However despite the differences in speed they both still grew after each scan ! None of them stayed static from scan to scan ! The liver they actioned  right away , the lung met was so small they hand wriggle room to monitor. My mum has also two benign lung nodules that popped up after treatment. They have never grown since . Always the same size within an allowed margin of error and never increased !
It is a complicated process but during consultations , despite being alarmed her team had actually gone back and looked at previous scans and were able to compare them .
If you are at all concerned you can send an email to your oncologist secretary and ask to chat it through more thoroughly. It’s sometimes after the event that things surface ! Getting more information or clarity can really settle your mind at times !

They certainly don’t seem concerned . How long ago was your previous scan ?

  • Thank you for your helpful reply my previous scan was the one previous to surgery a year ago.

  • Hi,

Long time to stay the same ! Sounds as though they are happy to go forward.
    All the very best !
