Hello I’m looking for advice for my 84yr old mother who had surgery for bowel cancer 4 months ago, no further treatment required. She is suffering from awful nausea, and can’t keep her food or meds down. She’s lost 1.5 stones,  is fading away and we’re all very concerned for her. She’s having regular weekly  blood tests, and often ends up in hospital overnight on a drip due to her low magnesium, potassium and calcium levels. We’re trying to cajole her into eating little and drinking, but with little success. A

Oh so sorry to hear that.  I assume they’ve fully checked her out and tried all the meds to help?  My husband is on chemo so of course he has a lot of anti-nausea meds and when he is on the steroid part if his treatment that really helps.  I mention this because I’m not sure it’s really the chemo causing the nausea for my husband and may just be from the surgery and messing up his digestion.Eating is both physical and psychological and it sounds like she needs medical attention in one or both areas.  I would try with the doctors for more help… it doesn’t sound like you trying to cajole her to eat is going to make the difference she needs.  Best wishes.

  • Hi ,

My mum had terrible nausea and sickness with low potassium. It can be a really difficult one to endure when it drops . Do you know what number it is at just now ? Took a while for my mum’s to stabilise after surgery !
I take it she is on medication for it ?

Our helpline staff have access to Macmillan nurses if that’s something you would like to chat over ?

My mum had to take daily tablets . Not sure how they manage the other electrolytes that have dropped .

My mum had to go into hospital for IV fluids and potassium too.

I have just discovered that M and S fresh creamed rice has 350 calories , around 29 grams of fat with one tiny pot ! We had to make every mouthful count too for a while with my mum . Milk shakes are another bit hitting calorie load . You can mix in an extra bar of chocolate with ice cream and milk . They can just sip it throughout the morning etc so not having to feel as though they are being forced to eat ! We also got a build up drink Complan from the supermarket health section . That made sure she was getting all her nutrients . She could tolerate the chicken soup with a d as lice of toast . Or add cream to a wee bit mashed potatoes   . We had to hid the calories as the very thought made her sick !  It’s such a struggle for them .

    Take care ,

  • Hi . I’ve not got a lot to add to the great advice that you’ve had so far but just wanted to ask if they had checked your mums CRP marker? It can indicate inflammation or infection in the body. I felt like this for about a month after my surgery and I had a raised CRP indicator and, after a scan, they found an infected fluid collection behind where my bowel had been rejoined.
Hope you’re able to get something sorted and your mum starts to improve

    Take care

Thank you Court will definitely try your tips. She’s just come out of an overnight stay in hospital hospital and they reviewed her meds, but nothings helping with the nausea at the moment. She has a blood test on Thursday, so will speak with her GP then x

  • Hi

M and S and Waitrose sell ginger shots ! Literally a similar size and might help with the nausea ! They are in their drinks cabinet along with the sandwiches to go in M and S . Similar location in Waitrose if either of them are handy !
Other than that I used melon with ground ginger sprinkled over . At least it was pleasant if it reappeared !

Lots of trial and error but you will find yourself paying close attention to the calories in small desserts etc.  It is amazing how many hidden calories there are !
