Hi all my husband was diagnosed with rectum cancer on Thursday he has a scan Tuesday to see if it spread I am so scared he is only 43 can someone please help me or give me advice I am been strong for him and my 2 kids

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. The waiting for scans, results, meetings etc. is probably the worst bit but once he has a treatment plan in place then things will honestly feel a bit better.

In the meantime please stay away from google - it is out of date, inaccurate and downright scary in places. Stay on here and/or the bowel cancer uk site and we will help you through this - you can ask anything you like - there is nothing too daft or embarrassing.

Once all the scan results are back then the MDT (multi disciplinary team) will meet - this consists of specialists from every field that might be involved in his treatment - and they will agree a plan for him then meet and discuss it with you. I’ve attached a link to a booklet below which describes some of the treatment and terminology etc.

My tumour was 9cm in from the anal verge and if you click on my name you can see the treatment I had. I buddied up with 2 other ladies who were diagnosed at the same time in 2016 and we’re all still cancer free.
Every cancer diagnosis is a shock but bowel cancer is pretty slow growing and very treatable. There will be a tough few months ahead but everyone on here will be happy to support you

Take care and please let us know how things go?

The NHS is also a good, reliable source of cancer information. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2020, had my operation and follow-on chemotherapy. I am now recovering from the chemotherapy drugs. The chemotherapy was the worst bit of the whole procedure. But hey, it's better to endure the chemotherapy that letting the cancer take hold!

  • Hi Louise thank you for reply we’re was your cancer my husband is in rectum
