Hi, my partner had an APR surgery for a low rectal cancer in early June. He's 65 and fit and well otherwise but now has a permanent colostomy. We'd like to hear from other men who've had the same procedure. He is still unable to sit for long and certainly not without a cushion, we've just bought a ring type one so we can at least go out a bit. He had a flap of skin and it seems to be that area that is causing the pain, he describes it as a pushing feeling into his 'bottom' although he no longer has a rectum or anus. Also one small area of the flap is still a bit weeping and this area chafes if he walks too far. We are bathing it with sterile saline and keeping it as dry as possible to aid healing. Can any of you identify with these things and advise how long it took for you to sit with ease/go back to work etc? He's doing really well with the colostomy although clearly it means some changes to the way we live. Any help/advice/support would be really gratefully received, thank you.
