Hi, I’m new on here, I had my bowel surgery last Tuesday (29/06) and have been recovering at home since Friday (2/07), I’m taking paracetamol for pain management every 4 hrs after declining tramadol & oral morphine, both didn’t add anything to relieve my pain, just made me feel worse, however, I’m experiencing some very weird symptoms including waves of dizziness and flushes (although I am 52 and this could be increased menopausal symptoms) and what I can only describe as head fog (pressure in my ears & jaw area), I don’t know if it’s the after effects of the op/treatment or side effects from paracetamol or something else? Anyone else experience anything like this? I’m also getting a lot of very painful trapped wind, despite walking and being careful what/how much I eat - does anyone have any thoughts/ suggestions please?
Thank you and sending positive wishes to everyone going through their own journey
Hi . Welcome to the board and great to hear that you’re through surgery. It is very early days so please don’t expect too much from your body just yet. I think a lot of what you’re describing is probably just the after effects of the op and hospital stay - let’s be honest it is not conducive to a good nights sleep is it? I was told I should be feeling better after 5-6 weeks so maybe you’re expecting a bit too much too soon?
Small walks are a great idea but don’t overdo it as your insides will still be settling down. If you’ve had keyhole then they will have pumped you full of air which can be quite uncomfortable especially in the chest area - peppermint tea can help with this. Brain fog? I think this can sometimes be a combination of fatigue, the anaesthetic working out of your system, shock, worry, relief……. don’t underestimate the mental effect of what you’ve been through.
The booklet below has a bit about recovery at home but I think you maybe just need to kick back a bit and allow yourself time to recover

Hello Jays Cats,
Yes I agree with Karen that too much walking so soon after op may not be very good, for now. I had my tumour removed Jan 2021 and only started walking around March.. I do love my walks every day now, and I do feel that they aid digestion and bowel movements. I think most people suffer with trapped wind after a colon procedure. Pepper mint tea should help, it did help me and also really being conscious of what I eat. Hoping things improve for you, and they will as you have only been home for a week! I only really felt 'back to normal' after a full 2 months! I am 46 and pretty healthy but it did take time. I spent some mornings doing gentle exercises, when I didn't feel ready to walk yet. Now I am up to around 10k steps per day and try to get out every day, but it took time.
Take care, hope you feel better in time to come, best wishes.
