I was diagnosed with Advanced Bowel Cancer and Secondary Cancer of the Liver on the 29th April, I am sitting receiving my second cycle of Chemotherapy today, expecting an initial 6 cycles over 18 weeks. The response from NHS Fife and Macmillan has been amazing, slightly worried as I’m waiting on a return call from my Oncologist to discuss the detailed MRI of the liver that the Liver Specialist team wanted, the words “more prominent” where used! The MRI was taken before any treatment so fingers crossed. As a family we are dealing with this head on with nothing but positivity.
Good luck and best wishes to everybody
So pleased you joined in and also getting good care through in Fife !
Have you been referred to the liver unit at Edinburgh? We are very fortunate to have such a good facility there . They removed 73% of my mum’s liver there . It was exactly ten years ago this very week she was in ! It has remained clear . She did have six cycles of chemo first as she was inoperable to begin with !
It really is a centre of excellence! The high dependency unit there is wonderful!
It is always a worry waiting on scans to a degree but they like to see the areas of shrinkage from the start and then they like them for theatre when they operate .
I love the language used in Edinburgh. They talked about getting “creative” around a blood supply in the liver with my mum !
However I really trusted the surgeon who did the pre op talk . However he could not get theatre space in time so she went to another list .I did a quick Google search and it came up as “ surgeon to the Queen” I was not quite sure what it meant but it sounded good . He was also the first surgeon to successfully do a liver transplant in Scotland ! So I felt they were a good department all round and they did not disappoint.
Take care ,

Court,
Thanks for your reply, I’m only at the start of the initial 18 weeks of chemotherapy, 4 weeks in so a bit to go. The Oncologist did say this afternoon that going by the MRI on the liver pre treatment surgery is not an option, but she emphasised this decision was taking prior to any chemotherapy.
Really appreciate your positive reply,
Regards,
Charlie
Hi
All the best with your chemo . My mum was inoperable twice but it was a powerful tool and chemo turned it around .
Hope you experience the same !
Take care and keep in touch .

Oh that’s very kind of your wife
You sound as though you have a good team around you ! I think my mum has literally crossed the main teaching hospitals in the central belt to you get a feel for their care and the drs are very good at explaining everything in such detail . You hang onto their every word though .
Hopefully chemo will do it’s stuff and you will be in the liver unit too! That’s interesting that they want to see your scan prior to chemo . New systems must be in play as it was all after chemo for my mum ! We are outdated!!! But that’s a good thing really .
Have a good day !
