Hopeful but anxious

Diagnosed day before yesterday with cancer of the colon, after a colonoscopy by the excellent team at Kettering General Hospital. Not too happy about this, if course, and trying to process my emotions.

I am only 56 and I feel fit & healthy! So one sentiment is, why me? But I have good reason to feel very lucky, as my sigmoidoscopy last year (after turning 55) got cancelled because of Covid - and my cancer would have quite possibly been missed by that scope, as it is much further back, right next to the appendix. Because it was cancelled though, I got offered a FIT test, and traces of blood were found in that so I then had the full colonoscopy.

Kettering immediately sent me for a CT scan, I’ve been assigned a very helpful support nurse and yesterday she phoned to say my results are back and all very promising. No signs of metastasis, all organs got a clean bill of health. Biopsy results expected in two days’ time then surgical team meets next week. The doctor who performed the colonoscopy said I would be an urgent case and that most likely I will have surgery to remove 3 feet of colon with 5/6 weeks.

In short, I am feeling optimistic but also anxious and uncertain as I am not sure whether the cheery positivity of everyone around me isn’t just false hope. Reassurance, friendly responses of all kinds gratefully received.

Anyway it’s getting late and I am up early for my 90-minute drive to work so I’d better leave it here. Thanks for reading!

Hi did you have any symptoms ? Sounds like their moving fast and very positive , hard to know what to write to ge honest. Enjoy Ur day at work , long drive that .Smile

  • I'm at very similar stage, so feel very sympathetic. I'm a little further along the road, older (71), so no job to worry about, and in my case there has been some spread, but the team here in Swindon are giving me lots of support, I see the surgeon tomorrow, in preparation for a colon op. Good luck!

  • Welcome to the forum from me too !
Great news that it has not spread and sounds as though it will not be long until you are scheduled into a surgeon’s diary !

Long commute to work though ! You must be exhausted!

Hope it all goes well for you and as the questions start to unfold you can ask anything and someone will be around to answer !

    Take care ,

  • Hi  snd a warm welcome to the board from me. I also thought ‘why me’ but then decided that if 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime then I’d rather it was me than my mum or dad - maybe not very logical but then your heads all over the place isn’t it?

You’ve no spread which is good and bowel cancer is notoriously slow growing but very treatable so I think the medical team sound to be optimistic that the tumour can be fully removed.

I was stage 3 when diagnosed in 2016 and went through everything with 2 ladies that I ‘met’ on the bowel cancer uk board who were the same stage and we’re all still cancer free.

The fact that you’re fit and healthy will help with your recovery but just to make you aware that it will be several weeks before you’re allowed to drive/ride………not sure if you’ll miss your 90 mile daily drive to work…….?

Take care and let us know how you’re doing

  • Thanks Court. I’ve started a new thread with a question about COVID, in case you’ve got time to take a look. It’s titled “Avoiding COVID pre-surgery - what is the right thing to do?”. Thanks, Ben

You might find this leaflet of some interest . I think it is from the area you are being treated in and covers what to do to prepare for surgery during the pandemic . I had a look at the question you asked . I am not sure if they are around at the weekend but I certainly would self isolate as you really don’t want covid prior to surgery . Just my opinion but securing your pathway to surgery and the cure would most certainly be my priority. However I think it’s all covered in the link above .

    Hope your doing ok.
