Hi
I've just been diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer. I'm 48 and have a nine year old daughter and a very supportive husband. They cannot operate on my tumour at the moment as it's too big. So I will be receiving chemo to try and shrink it. I also have some spots on my liver which they think is cancer. And I need to have a PET scan to see if there's anything they've missed. Hopefully not! It's a bewildering time but I'm determined to get better. Just wanted to say hello. And maybe hear some positive stories?
Thanks
Miray
Hello
Big welcome to the forum . So sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. Of course you want to read some positive stories to off set the overload of information you have just received. It’s overwhelming for sure . If you click on my user name you can read my mum’s story through a stage 4 diagnosis.
I am also going to tag in Hayleyc89 as her husband has just gone through the process of shrinking a tumour prior to surgery !
It is a difficult time as they gather the information together but hopefully they will get your treatment plan together soon and give you some structure and a way forward .
Feel free to ask any questions.

Hi. So sorry to hear of your diagnosis.
My husband was diagnosed with a colon cancer it was too big to operate on at first so he had 6 rounds of chemotherapy this shrunk the tumor successfully and he was able to have he's op which was also a success. He is starting chemo again this week as they took 19 lymph nodes when they operated and 1 had cancer in so to be on safe side he's having mop up chemotherapy.
I hope everything goes very well for you xx
Thank you so much. It's helpful to hear from people who understand the experience. I want to apologise for selfishly saying I wanted to hear positive stories... I think I'm still processing and want to keep my blinkers on for a while. I hope everyone can understand. I tried to change my original post but couldn't. I want to hear and support all types of experiences not just positive ones... I will read your mum's story. Thank you for the information.
Miray
Thank you Miray. Originally the surgeon wasn't sure the chemo would be a success so for it to shrink and then be operated on is amazing we are very fortunate that it has gone this way. X
Hey , no problem at all . You are not selfish at all just looking for some reassurance in the midst of a difficult diagnosis.
No need to edit anything but if you wish to all you do is click on the small “more” sign under your post and select edit .
I think patient or carer does that , I certainly did . I wanted to see how people coped , what route they had taken and most importantly to try and fine a way forward ! It’s a common theme here . However you sound a lovely person wanting to support others and I hope in turn we can do the same for you .
Take care ,
