Hi all & hope you are doing ok today.

It's great to have this community and this forum and thank you to Macmillan for providing it. I have posted this on the general newbie site, but it was suggested I post here too.

I have a question regarding asking to change hospitals and I just wondered if anyone had experience of this.

I was recently diagnosed with colon cancer at the Whittington Hospital in Islington North London, but was sent to UCH (University College London Hospital) for my operation. The care there was outstanding and UCH very much more modern that the Whittington which in itself is uplifting.

All my follow up treatment / scans etc are currently at the Whittington but I am wondering about asking if I can go to UCH for chemo treatment or even get my care transferred there. On the other hand, I don't want to delay things. Has anyone had a similar experience of asking to switch and/or any experience of chemo treatment at either the Whittington or UCH.

Many thanks

  • Hi . There is a post on the Bowel Cancer UK site from a couple of years ago which mentions Whittington. Unfortunately the lady that posted it is no longer with us but she seemed to speak very highly of it?

  • Hello Tiarella, I don’t know about changing hospitals, I’m under the UCLH and all I can say is they are very good. I know the Whittington, I live between the two. I was recently sent from the  UCLH to the Royal Free for liver surgery I was too much of a risk, so I was treated with Radio Frequency Ablation back at the UCLH for my liver. I don’t know what the cancer treatment is like at the Whittington. Apart from the lockdown last year, I waited from March till June for the diagnostic. After a couple of hiccups down to COVID. Treatment started fast and I feel they’ve kept an eye on me. I can’t help you about chemo I had the tablets. The radiology department was very good, the staff were lovely. I had RFA there last week and you are taken up by a member of staff and they have a designated lift that only people who are having a procedure done go in and you have to stay in the green zone. All I can say they have been good to me. Best wishes Nelly1955.

    Hi Nelly1955

I saw the very nice oncologist at the Whittington yesterday and she said it was no problem to transfer to UCH. While I want to have the chemo as soon as I can, she said we have some time at this stage and that transferring hospitals should not cause a delay so I am very grateful. In any event, I have to wait for the results of an MRI on my liver irrespective of which hospital I go to. She said I will need chemo for 6 months and one advantage at UCH is that they can put in a portacath which they don't do at the Whittington so I think it's all good!

Thanks very much for keeping in touch and hope you are doing ok
