Hi. I’m just about 6months post APR  Initial finds after op all clear, going for ct scan next week with check in with surgeon in a couple of weeks.  I’ve had very bad back pain over the last 2 months, caused partially by lying on side as unable to sit.  However several visits to a Chiropractor have solved the pain issue thankfully. But they want me to start doing exercise classes or aqua robics ?  I’m worried it’s too soon after the major surgery and may cause more harm then good

but I do feel my energy and strength levels are low

Anyone got any ideas suggestions please

  • Hi  My local gym runs a cancer rehab class so you could see if there’s something similar near you? It also runs a senior circuits class where you do gentle exercise (and a lot of chatting) and also a sit fit class - again - gentle exercise and a lot of chatting! I think the main thing is to do what you feel comfortable with and not a class where you’re following strenuous routines.

  • I joined Sarah Russell online around week 4.  Specific classes post ostomy surgery you buy live or download .i also bought her book.

I also started back doing classes around week 12, but very small weights (literally 1kg!) and much slower than normal and sometime just lie on the floor when i hit wall, no one cared.  Very very slow progress for first 2 years.  I am now 2.5 year post surgery and finally think i am.getting there, but still struggle with stamina.  it really has been slow but steady, but i now find strength and core out weighs stamina and cardio in my focus.

  • theostomystudio.co.uk/   this the site to join classes

  • Many thanks, I’ll certainly look at the online classes don’t have confidence for gym.

  • Hi

my NHS trust provide active cancer classes for free to all cancer patients. They actively encourage you to go. They have 2 levels of fitness and all of us that go have cancer. It’s been great on both a fitness level and socially.
they have on line video sessions. Search Active Cancer Harrogate. You can work out to them from home.

  • Not sure where you are but its worth seeing if there is any cancer rehab classes near you.  My husband joined the Active Together programme run by the Yorkshire cancer centre and it was great- specialist classes run by physios trained in cancer rehab. I think Maggies do classes too.

    Good luck with your recovery.

  • Many thanks for your replies. I’ve check my local Maggies centre. They to yoga and a sit and excercise classes which don’t really fit with me thank again for caring

  • Hi thanks for your post.  I went on Sarah Russell site and found her Book  The Bowel Cancer recovery toolkit. Only just getting into it but found it really good. It goes into how you’re feeling about things, like exercising and classes. And how being fitter helps how you feel about yourself.  I think I’ll find using the book exercises easier than going to a class. And she bases it on post operation and cancer.

So I feel confident in giving a go   Early days but I’ll let you know

  • I was referred by the hospital for cancer exercises run by a cancer charity linked to the hospital. They were very keen for me to enrol on them because of the health benefits. I have just started my 8th cycle of Folfox and had emergency surgery in March. They said I could wait until I'd finished my chemo (in Nov) before starting exercise classes or start now, so I started as soon as I could, particularly when they told me studies have shown that cancer is 30% less likely to recur with regular exercise ... that really focused my mind as that's a higher percentage than my chemo is offering me!

I'd enquire at your hospital with the oncology team to see if there is anything on offer associated with the hospital, or they may have a list of other exercise studios in your area that offer classes for cancer patients. It kind of surprises me that some hospitals are not as proactive as others in getting patients on board with exercise classes now I've been told how beneficial they are.

    Very best wishes.

  • Many thanks. I too have read that statistic and it’s good odds eh?  My local area hospital doesn’t do much really. I have terrific support from the stoma nurses but other than council run stuff there isn’t much
