diet after colon surgery?

Hi,

Have a date for my surgery, positive meeting with surgeon after MDT. The tumour is high risk dysplasia and requires surgery, surgeon has informed me that further biopsy will be done and there is the risk that cancer cells may still show up and chemo may be required. Will cross that bridge if it comes. I also met with the pre-rehab nurse? and when discussing diet after surgery she said I would be on a normal diet from the day after, I can eat anything as long as it is small portions and can have any snacks. Anything I have read says bland, low fibre diet for approx first 2 weeks and then introduce foods slowly.

Can anybody clarify this for me?

thanks

  • Hi  They tend to recommend a bland low fibre diet for people who have a stoma so thats maybe what you’ve seen? I would recommend being careful what you eat for the first few days as the bowel does not like being manhandled and can go on strike after surgery. I had a lot of soup and jacket potatoes  with cottage cheese!

    Hope everything goes well

  • Hi Mac,

On the day of surgery I was fed jelly & ice cream and soup. Following day was on a so-called 'light' diet, which was fine because there was nothing on the menu that I disliked and only fancied small portions anyway. From day +2 onwards I was allowed access to full hospital menu. Again I found small portions best and had an occasional snack.

Took about 8-10 days for the system and bowels to get back to near normal. But I felt an improvement every day, and that was the main driver.

I wish you well and hope things go OK for you.
