Blood in stool

Hi all,

Went to toilet yesterday and to my surprise there was blood in the bowl and on the tissue. First thing I did, google it, it’s been 2 days and I am glued to my phone trying to find informations. Never had any symptoms but after reading all the informations looks like that all the symptoms are suddenly appearing. Had a panick attack yesterday and I am worried sick. Going away on holiday with my son this week but on my return will go to gp for a FIT test. Didn’t tell no one, right thing to do?

  • Hi  Yes I personally think that’s the right thing to do because you don’t know what’s causing the blood yet? If the FIT test comes back positive then you will probably be referred for a colonoscopy.

Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis. Blood in the stool can be caused by several conditions eg. Diverticulitis, crohns, colitis, ibs so please stay away from google or you will find yourself jumping to conclusions which can quickly escalate.

Ive attached a link to a symptoms diary which is published on the bowel cancer uk site. It may help to record your symptoms in case you need a GP appointment

    Take care

  • I had one incident of blood on tissue then 7/8 month later saw blood on outside of stool.Like you,I then went on holiday before requesting a FIT test from the bowel screening service and contactiShrugmy GP surgery .I had to do another FIT test as it seems the one from the screening service is a FOB test and not as goodShrugIn the meantime I requested a blood test to be taken 3 out of the 6 tests done were out of range but GP reported not a concern, still waiting to hear result of FIT test but have a f to f appointment with a GP just over 2 weeks.

Yes I am worried BUT I am 70, have had bowel urgency and changes in bowel habits .

Go enjoy your holiday there is nothing you can do until you get the results. Hoping good results for us both

  • I m not that young anymore, 60. Terrorised to go to toilet yesterday, but fortunately no blood, just diarrhoea, Didn’t have any change in bowel habit or urgency. Definitely requesting a fit test when back from holiday. Hopefully all goes well for both of us
