Hi I have had stoma for 5 years due to collerectal cancer. Had parastomall hernia repair with no problems 2 yrs ago. Today I noticed a new small hole just a little way of stoma. Has anyone else had this. Have got home visit from stoma nurse on 7th July. But would just like to know if anyone else has had this. Thanks

  • Hi

I’m sorry you haven’t received an answer yet to your post-it may be that no-one has experienced the same issue. My reply will bump your post to the top of the discussions again.

I’ve got a permanent colostomy myself, but I haven’t experienced a  parastomal hernia so I don’t know if the hole you have found is in any way connected to the repair. Is the hole in the skin next to the stoma? Is it painful or weeping? I appreciate that you have a visit from the stoma nurse coming up, but if you feel this should be checked out this weekend, please phone nhs 111 to get some advice.

  • Hi my gp called for district nurse to visit. She came this morning. Problem was stoma had retracted due to constipation  and shrinkage caused a gap. Stoma is now back where it should be and hole disappeared.  So just waiting for stoma review on Tuesday. Thank you x

  • Hi

That's very good news, so I’m glad you’ve got this sorted now. It will be good for you to have the stoma nurse review, but I’m pleased it was a straightforward reason for you and hope things will be  back to normal now.

  • Thank you. It's so worrying when u don,t know what's happening

  • Absolutely it is. I know my colostomy can retract and expand, sometimes accompanied by some discomfort, but I am on codeine medication which can cause constipation and make it harder to pass output.

Getting a reason for something happening gives us reassurance that there is nothing else untoward going on.
