Hi
im new here and scared, stressed and anxious after receiving results from a FIT test. I have a phone appointment in 10 days then a colonoscopy.
I don’t have any symptoms and I’m worried sick…. Anyone out there with any help, advice or reassurance?
thank you
Hi Jan05 Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis and the fit test positive result maybe be caused by ibs, colitis, diverticulitis, crohns. Try not to let your mind run away with you and have a look at this post for some tips on dealing with stress and anxiety
Take care and please let us know how you get on?
Karen x
Hi Jan05 It’s difficult to say - I had obvious symptoms ie. Blood after going to the toilet but I’ve heard others say that it was picked up by a fit test and they had no other symptoms? If, and it is if at the moment, it does turn out to be bowel cancer then it is notoriously slow growing but with a lot of treatment available. Sorry not to be able to give you a definitive answer x
I was passing blood when going to the toilet but convinced myself it was because I’d taken redundancy from my job so was having a cup of tea in bed before breakfast! We were going on holiday so I decided to go to the doctors to confirm that it was maybe piles and she fast tracked me under the gold standard guidelines for a colonoscopy. I could see a bloody mass on the screen during the colonoscopy and they told me after that they were 99% sure it was bowel cancer. The biopsy confirmed it and the scan showed that it was stage 3 with a suspected couple of lymph nodes affected. This was back in 2016 and if you click on my name then my profile page will show my treatment timeline.
Most people’s treatment is a lot more straight forward - I think I was just unlucky to have the couple of set backs that I did. It was tough at times but I’m still here now and still ‘no evidence of disease’.
Yes - I had follow up all clears for 5 years and, as far as I know, im still ok as are the 2 ladies who I became good friends with throughout. I’ve been on here since 2016 and seen lots of success stories x
