Hi guys

Bit of a general question regarding work and employers. If you work for a large company, how have they helped to make you feel more comfortable at work, particularly in very warm weather?!

I ask, because we all received an email stating that we had to wear our thick polo shirts even in 30+°. I get so hot, sweaty and generally uncomfortable!! Before this we were told we could wear cotton t-shirts, but now it's changed!!

Thanks

  • Hi  Hmm that’s a tricky one. Your employer has to make reasonable adjustments if your cancer or treatment is disadvantaging you at work so you could maybe meet with your team leader/hr and explain your problem? It might be hard to prove that your condition is causing the problem rather than the excessive heat that is affecting everyone the same so would maybe a fan on your desk help the cause or are you not desk based? I know a lot of companies like a corporate uniform so maybe suggest corporate cotton T-shirts for future hot weather situations?

I’ve attached a link to the page about cancer and employment but often a chat with your management team is the best way forward?

  • Hi Karen

I have looked at the equality act 2010 and in my opinion my employer has not made reasonable adjustments. I am not office based, it is quite a physically and mentally challenging job. We do not have air con, just a couple of fans. Extreme temperatures cause my eye to water a lot (because of all the treatment) and in regards to my operation last year on my bowel I just want to feel comfortable. I completely understand that my employer wants us all to look professional, but certain people wore cotton t-shirts yesterday who have no health conditions. It was very frustrating, and not much to ask, it's only on really hot days! I have spoken with my manager and i am going to wear a cotton t-shirt, if anyone from head office then wants to talk I am more than willing!

    Thanks

  • My understanding was that employers had a duty to keep employees reasonably warm but had no duty to keep them cool. That was the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act.
