Clothes with a stoma

My son is worried he won't be able to wear trousers as his stoma is on his waist line. Anybody have any ideas about this?

  • Hi  There’s no reason why he can’t wear trousers but just make sure he doesn’t have anything like a belt tight across his stoma? I wore jeans and I was fine? Underwear wise I wore ‘big knickers’ as it felt to support the bag and made me feel a bit more secure. Is he still in hospital? x

  • No he came home Saturday but he is still in pain he couldn't go to his house because he couldn't manage the stairs. Think he thought he would be fine when he got home but he is really tired I have told him it will be a long job. His kidney operation will be in 3 months

  • Initially he may want to stick to soft waists like sweatpants. Undoubtedly he is still swollen and healing from surgery. But eventually, once fully healed, he will be able to wear regular pants. It's early days still.

  • Should be no reason why he cant wear trousers.as others have said, maybe sweatpant initially. I have also read about some men wearing braces instead of a belt.some quite funky ones out there.

Ps I tend to wear jeans a lot which dont require a belt and as long as I dont get the low waisted ones, fit perfectly.

  • My father in law tends to wear joggers around the house for ease with his stoma, but wears smart trousers to go out. Braces are an excellent idea if belts are too much.
