My partner has stage 4 colorectal cancer which has spread to the liver and is on 2nd line palliative chemo of FOLFIRI. He recently went into hospital and was diagnosed with infection. He has been out of hospital for 4 days and has yellow eyes and yellowing skin on his abdomen (assuming jaundice) and is eating very little because he says everything is tasteless, like cardboard (2 or 3 mouthfuls of food). I’m worried this is end of life and he has given up although he wants to get back on track with his chemo next week (missed a session because of being in hospital). Has anyone else had similar experience and managed to ‘bounce’ back from a bad infection?
I had sepsis about 7 weeks after my surgery and nearly died. Infections are difficult to pull through. They kill your appetite and diminish your mental resilience. I needed to be rehospitalized. It was difficult but I pulled through.
However, I am personally very concerned about the jaundice. I don't think this is a situation that can wait. I'd suggest you call his treatment team as soon as possible or go back to the hospital. I don't know that he can pull through without medical assistance.
