Constantly Cancelled Appointments

Hospital continues to jerk around with my quarterly appointments, which have serious bearing on whether I get surgery for my post bowel cancer surgery stoma related hernias (two of them).. Set originally for Feb 20th, they moved the appointment three months to May 7th. When I complained they agreed to move it back to April 1st but now just cancelled that and changed it to May 27th, later than the previous later date peddled at me . I've requested a change of specialist. I really don't trust this clown at all now. Feeling extremely disrespected and expendable now. They know my condition gives me anxiety and depression. This does not help one iota.

  • Hello

I am Brian one of the Community Champions here at Macmillan. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. I have a different cancer so can't give you the answer about your treatment however by me replying your post will be "bumped up" to the top of the page and I hope seen and answered by other bowel group members.

Have you spoken to PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison service or PASS in Scotland) at your hospital telling them of your issues and asking for them to sort the situation out? Your hospital PALS team can be found on the hospital web page.

If you need some help with your anxiety and depression please do give our Support Line a call on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week). They have plenty of resources available to help you along on your personal journey.

If I can do anything for you please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • I'm from the US so I can't advise on your medical system. However I have 2 stomas and a peristomal hernia.

My surgeon advised against surgery to treat the hernia. These hernias tend to recur and every surgery to repair carries additional risk. I was advised to wear a hernia support belt and that has been very helpful.

Perhaps you could use some of this time to research this surgery to see if it's really necessary. I'd definitely advise getting a second opinion.

Perhaps your second opinion surgeon could become your new doctor... if that's permitted in your medical system. I switched doctors this way many years ago when it was clear that the new guy was much more expert than the other.
