Painting to help relieve the stress…

Since my journey started in October 2024, I started painting again.

It has really helped distract me & it has provided moments of mental silence (rather than my normal racing thoughts of fear or anxiety).

I’ve recently finished a painting of my brother & his colleague. He is a CT Surgeon and he spends most of time removing lung cancers. He’s put my painting in his office.

For anyone who is really stressed out…think about art therapy…drawing, colouring, painting, or crafting.

You don’t have to be good at art - just give it a go!

You’ll be surprised how soothing it can be x Blush

  • Wow, that's brilliant Sonibee. I intend to do some crafting too, I agree that it's therapeutic, your mind gets drawn into whatever you are doing/making. Today I started planting some seeds in my hobby room, I am damned if this op will stop me having flowers in the garden in the summer! They only need watching and watering at the moment but as I usually use this space for crafting I will have to wait until I have the space to craft again or may temporarily use the dining table (which I might get away with, OH normally moans about the mess, but maybe he'll be lenient with me just now lol). I wanted to get the messy planting bit out of the way before my op next Tuesday, also I want keep busy to stop me overthinking. My sewing machine has been put away for a while so I will have to find something else, maybe make some greetings cards. Whatever it is it won't be anywhere near as impressive as your painting, it's awesome.

  •   - I find gardening very relaxing and therapeutic too! Just that the weather wasn’t great after my op - but I’m really looking forward to the spring.

I agree that hobbies help keep the mind distracted- it doesn’t take away ‘the reality’ of what we are going through, nor the pain - but I found that post-operatively, painting gave some structure to my day and bursts of distraction (even if for 30 minutes). Slight smile

  • I love this painting!

I had that all planned, I was going to WRITE through chemo/radio...not about cancer, just write that novel or several I have had  inside me for a while( just like the damn tumour in my rectum!) Broke my arm 3 weeks before treatment started so still haven't done it. But creativity and distraction are great, would recommend to anyone.
