Weight loss

I have bowel cancer, awaiting my operation.

I just wondered if I'm likely to lose weight after the operation?

And if I will, what is the general amount?

  • I lost weight after my surgery. The antibiotics made me nauseous and I had trouble eating. I'm not sure how common it is to need antibiotics after surgery and not everyone who gets them feels sick.

It would be impossible to predict how much weight since that will vary greatly by individual.

  • Hi  Yes you’ll probably lose some weight after the op but as Susan says, it’s hard to say how much. If you’re already a little underweight then it might be worth trying to put a few lbs on before the op? There’s a link below to the Macmillan page about adding energy and calories to food and also some links within it with meal ideas?

I know you’ve been through so much recently and you’re worried about your dogs too so it’s important to try and get in the best place possible before your surgery.

Please keep posting and we’ll try and answer any concerns that you have and the support desk is also there if you want to chat to someone in person

    Take care

  • Hi all.

I dod lose a considerable amount of weight after surgery, around 4 kg but put that and more on whilst undergoing chemo, eating was the only thing that stopped me feeling sick !!

  • I wish eating stopped me from feeling sick during chemo.

I know everyone is different but sometimes the differences still surprise me. Joy

  • I lost over a stone from a couple of days before my surgery to a couple of weeks after. I put it back on once everything started working properly and I was doing less physical activity. If you need to lose weight, it’s possibly a good place to start, but if you don’t (like I didn’t) it seems a bit scary at first but things have normalised now.

  • I lost almost 7kg from before the op until 6 weeks after. Then I put all of it back on, and a little more during chemo when I wasn't very active and was on steroids. So my weight went 77kg -> 70 kg -> 82 kg.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I appreciate all that you have said.

It is hard Sleepy I miss my husband especially whilst I'm going  through this.
