Bit of a question for you all. I’ve recently been diagnosed with colon cancer and am having my op mid December. I’m fine I’m working full time (contract role) obviously I’ve got bills to pay and my current contract is ending mid Jan. my employer is well away of my situation and understands that I’ll be off sick for the last month of my contract. They are super supportive.
I’ve recently interviewed for a permanent job at a new company (came up pre diagnosis) and now they’ve offered me the position which I’d love to accept but the expectation of stating 2nd Jan is not possible. How do I navigate this? I know that I’ve not told them about my diagnosis because quite frankly it’ was none of their business but I’d quite like to work there. Just not sure how to deal with it.
Hi Scoutabout That’s a tricky one isn’t it? You’re probably looking at 5 weeks recovery from the operation at least and then most people would maybe go back on phased return. There’s also the possibility that you might need chemo afterwards if the pathology report shows that any of the lymph nodes are affected. Could you put the start date back a month then you’ll have had longer to recover and also have a better idea of any future treatment?
The support desk has a Work Support Expert if you want yo give them a ring in the number below for a chat?
Take care

Hi Nicnak72
I’ve actually accepted the job. I’ve clarified with my current employer that my contract will end at the end of Jan with them (otherwise I would have sit tight and stay where I am) Luckily they will be paying me full sick pay until I finish with them. Obviously my contract ending has nothing to do with my diagnosis but because that’s when my contract was due to end.
I’m an eternal optimist and I’m going to do my best to get fully recovered by end Jan. obviously I need to have a conversation with my new employer about pushing that start date back. I’ve found out that cancer is a protected characteristic so we cannot be discriminated against when we need time off. This made me feel better and confident.
I actually got sacked from a job a few years ago. Two weeks after I started my dad passed away To say they treated me appallingly is an understatement. They let me have time off to see him and for the funeral but constantly criticised my work when I was paralysed with grief So to know that it’s expected for employers to be supported in this situation has taken away so much worry
my health certainly comes first so if it becomes too much I’ll just leave
