Understanding the FIT score.

Hi,

My wife's FIT score is 400. I'd like to know.

  • What increments does the test go up from, so 10, 20, 30, or does it go 10, 100, 200, or 10, 11, 12, 13, etc.?
  • Is 400 the highest or is, as I think, >400 the highest?

Not easy this waiting for a colonoscopy is it folks. I'm just thinking aloud and thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi  I know  had a fit score of more than 400 but I don’t know what the increments are? You could maybe ring the support desk and see if one of the nurses could advise?

    Take care

  • Hi

You are right on the latter, it is whole numbers so could be 23, 145, etc until over 400 when it is lumped as >400. This is the highest measurement of occult blood they use in FIT.

Even at this highest band of >400, according to NHS a couple of years ago, 3 out of 4 cases are not cancer.

It's also worth remembering that the FIT is a single point in time test so on it's own is not conclusive, though is still a helpful tool in the toolbox.

Colonoscopy and a scan can help further rule things in and out.

  • Thanks CrumpetsOrToast,

This is really useful. I'm not trying to second-guess the forthcoming colonoscopy my wife will have, but I couldn't find much info out, so thank you.
