Hi All,
My name is Kev and my now 80 year old mam had an operation in July 22 to remove Stage 3 Bowel Cancer tumour. The op went well and she has had regular check ups since, blood tests fine, scans etc, fine. A long term issue for my mam is diahorreah which she takes loperomide for - sometimes works sometimes does not.
Before the cancer diagnosis my mam was very active, outgoing and still is when she can be but lately I would say the past 3-4 months I have noticed a change in her perception to life, her mental state. Worrying about the future, talking a lot about the past with no real interest in looking forward. I totally understand why but I am struggling to understand how to deal with this and try to put my mam in a more positive state of mind. When she eats it can go straight through her and this is also holding her back from being social, I know there is a lot playing on her mind and was wondering if anyone can help me help my mam to overcome this. For a woman her age she came through the op with no issues at all and quickly but I know she is worried the cancer will resurface, the implication for her kids and if anyone has any advise I would be most grateful.
Thank You
Hi Northernsoul
Welcome to the forum and it’s so lovely to see how much you care .
My own mum is a similar age . I think their confidence in their health gets more complex at that age anyway but add getting to a toilet on time really adds pressure to socialising.
My mum has a radar key to access toilets and we plan where we go so she always has access .
You could speak to her GP as it sounds as though she could do with a review to see if they can make any adjustments and to address the mental health impact .
Macmillan also has teamed up with Bupa to offer six free counselling sessions if that should be of any assistance. Our helpline staff could advise you on this or just in general on how to get get your mum back to a better quality of life . 0808 808 0000.
My first port of call is always her GP . He has been brilliant at altering aspects to see if improvements can be made .
Take care ,
Court
