Bowel cancer

Hi, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2020. I had surgery and 3 months chemotherapy. 6 months later they found a spot on my lung which they monitored until it was 10mm then I had surgery. No chemo this time.  I have been clear for 2 years but my recent scan has showed another tiny spot in the same lung. I am waiting for a PET scan and where I go from here. Can anyone help me please?

    Hi
I have added a few links that explain it better than I can .

Was it a thoracic surgeon that said you can’t be operated on ? Did they give a reason ?

You are entitled to a second opinion and it’s certainly something to consider as it gives you lots of information to make and information choice .

You also might like to pop onto bowel cancer U.K. group as they have some long term stage 4 patients who have a group you can join . It will show you how other clinicians are treating the spread .

My mum’s oncologist remained very proactive with her even into her 80s . She has been dealing with the spread  to her lungs since 2014 so very slow growing .

Yours seem to be similar in that regard .

  • That all sounds so positive. Thank you. I haven’t had the PET scan yet, only my routine CT which shows a 7.9mm nodule. My nurse said it is unlikely they will operate as it’s in the same lung as my previous one. I had a wedge resection and was under the impression that was so they had something to play with if it came back. She told me I possibly had options but they work for some and not others. It was very negative. Once I’ve had the PET scan they will let me know what they are doing.

    Thanks for your reply x

  • I asked for my mum’s to be reviewed by a thoracic surgeon . Always best to let the specialist decided what they can and can’t do. Also it’s reasonable to ask for a radiologist to review RFA options . If you are not getting that you can ask for a second opinion away from your area . That’s where it’s beneficial to connect with others to know the right people who are proactive to consult with .

  • Hi

My mum’s team had an MDT which referred her to her lung surgeon and he took it to their specialist MDT . That I would imagine would be the normal decision making on specialist areas .

  • Thank you so much. What an inspirational story.
All the best to your amazing Mum and it sounds as though you have been there every step of the way.

  • I think because I’ve had surgery in the same lung already they are saying the risks would out way the benefits, but I’m definitely going to get a second opinion this time if I’m not happy with the decision.

    Thanks

  • Hi Adele

I think that has already sent you a link to a Lung ablation? It might be worth asking your team about the possibility of having this simple non - invasive procedure.

I think it all depends on the size of the nodule, yet also the position in your lung, & the depth. As you have had prior lung surgery in that area; that may of course affect any procedure, but it's certainly worth asking about.

    Good luck
