Hi ,

I was hoping someone could help me , my cancer folder did contain about financial help from macmillan but I just feel like I can't,

In my mind , im the one who donates to them and helps where I can ,

And I feel like there are other people worse than what I am probally needing that money more ,

My problem is my hospital is 72 miles there and back , and ive had to go quite a few times over this last month ,

Even yesterday i was there because of a lump they found in my breast and armpit , thankfully they think it's hormonal and not cancer ,

I've been 5 times in the last month,  I have to go again on the 19th for my pre assessment and then the 28th for surgery ,

And it's not just that it's the hospital parking charges there ridicolus it's £3.90 for an hour and goes straight up to £8 ! ,

I'm going to be in hospital for a week after surgery and my husband will have to drive those miles and the parking charges and we are both now not working ,

I'm £7400 in debt , my dog had to have leg surgery as she had a ruptured knee my insurance only covered £5k and it was £5900 so far she needs to have scans again in a month ,

I've never been as low on money as I have now ,

But the guilt of asking macmillan for help is so overwhelming ,

Does anyone know of any other kind of help ?

I even hate the fact I have to ask this question on here

Sorry in advance

I just dont know who to ask  Disappointed

  • Hi

    Give our helpline a call . 0808 808 0000.

They have a benefits advisor . There are criteria for some grants but would be worthwhile letting them give you the up to date advice.Don’t struggle on your own . They will get someone to contact you .

Then in the future when circumstances are more favourable you could maybe do a fundraiser or give your time to an event but for now it’s not the time and the very reason people contribute. To take the financial pressure away from an already tough time .

    Take care ,

    Court

  • Thank you for your help Heart️

  • Minimal help with the wider issues, Clair, but my trust offer free parking for cancer treatment (definitely made a difference!)- they just give you a permit.  Check it out just in case someone has forgotten to offer but as soon as my longer treatment was kicking in - not just the odd visit to discuss stuff- the radiotherapy team offered. They also have "hospital hotels" at both sites for patients/families who travel longer distances- I am lucky enough to be very nearby, but I would definitely look into staying  or seeing if your husband can stay with you when you are in- you would certainly qualify.  Also so much less tiring than that round trip, that must be so stressful.

I would ask Macmillan. There is no shame in asking, and I think even less so as you yourself donate!  Most of us have had those hard financial times and it's just horrible, been there. But they are there for that purpose and as Court says, you can do something for them when you're through all this.
