Hi, I have a stoma due to bowel cancer, the op was in October, afterwards I declined chemo. Since then I have heard nothing about any follow-up appointments, is this because I refused chemo?
Hi Milkmaid66 The NICE guidelines are that you should be monitored with CEA checks and scans tor the next 3 years so it might be worth ringing your colorectal support nurse and just checking the frequency of your checks? The fact that you declined chemo should not make any difference to your monitoring

Thanks, I did ring, apparently I get à blood test at 6 months and a check at 12 months, I don't think this is enough but cannot afford private health care
Hi Milkmaid66
Did you have your follow up post operation?
Also you should have an appointment with your stoma nurse
I didn’t have chemo either though it wasn’t offered, I had my consultation with my surgeon and was given my surveillance diary with dates of future monitoring which gave me confidence.
Best wishes
Ann
Saw an oncologist who suggested chemo, nurse phoned a couple of days later, that's when I refused chemo. Stoma nurse has done her two visits and stoma team have phoned. My concern is no one seems to want to check to see if cancer was completely removed or has it continued
Have you seen your surgeon for a follow up appointment?
Ann
Oh. I thought that having a follow up after surgery was a given. I’m sorry about that
I was seen a couple of weeks after operation and he examined and checked me out and explained exactly their procedures for monitoring then I saw my nurse who gave me a follow up diary
Can you phone your colorectal nurse team for reassurance?
Ann
Hi lovely sorry you feel like you've been abandoned. My husband had his stoma formed after emergebcy surgery for ruptured bowel due to colon cancer on 1st October. We had a scan 4 weeks later and then after a further 2 weeks a surgical follow up and a week later oncology follow up. We have had 2 stoma nurse follow up appointments since his discharge and 3 weekly telephone oncology appointments while he was on treatment.
We are due another scan and surgical follow up in March and then if all ok nothing for 6 months then it goes to yearly checks. Hope this helps, I feel like you should have been seen. See if your GP can chase things for you.
Take care
