Bowel Prep

Hi All,

Just on here to have a bit of a winge and to be a baby! So I had my 1 year check back in November, bloods and CT scan all good, but referred for a colonoscopy as well to cover all bases. Anyway, the appointment has finally come through which I am getting nervous about as the thought of them finding something is terrifying! I know logically it is bound to be okay.

what I am being a baby about is the bowel prep!! Just the thought of drinking it makes me feel like gagging! Sob You would think in this modern age they would have come up with something that didn’t taste so vile!!  The lady on the phone told me it was a new flavour in a happy voice, felt like asking if she hJoy tried it! But I know she was just trying to be positive Joy

I hope everyone is coping okay, whatever stage of this awful journey you are at .

No need to reply, think my friends are sick of me saying how I am dreading it so thought I would annoy you all instead.

  • It is a bit of an awful taste I agree.  I had a colonoscopy 5 months ago which was clear and nothing was found.  I got a letter and all the prep for another one at beginning of Feb.  Given that I am now a year post op and have other tests organised I am hoping they just organised all the tests at once not expecting me to have already had a colonoscopy.  Consultant wanted me to have one after chemo etc just to check bowel as I hadn't had one before (emergency op).  Have asked cancer nurse and hope she will reply saying I don't need it so soon after last one.

Last prep was spiced up with lime juice.  Made it only slightly more tolerable.  Good luck.

  • Hi Bex,

    I feel ya!

I had Klean Prep the first time and it was vile. I ended up with stomach ache from having to drink 4 litres of the disgusting stuff (although I only managed 3.75 litres before giving up)

For my surgery, I asked for Piccolax (unsure of correct spelling) and that was a breeze. 1 glass full, then another about 6 hours later. And it tasted a heck of a lot better.

    Good luck,

    Angela

  • Hi Angela,

Thank you for replying Slight smile

I had picolax for my first colonoscopy and I agree it was a breeze in comparison and having had others realise it was actually quite nice, the one I had before my surgery just tasted of salt!  The one I have now I haven’t had before but I have to have about 4 litres of it Grimacing

  • Hi. I can’t remember what bowel prep I had but pretty sure they said I could flavour it with squash as long as it wasn’t a dark one e.g. apple and blackberry. Might be worth asking.

  • Hi I totally agree with you  RL2374

That prep is vile the thought of it makes me gag. Yuk

i had. LAR August 21 having that prep for my colonoscopy that year

I still haven’t had a check up colonoscopy and I’m not pushing for it. Not sure if I’ve slipped through the net but I’m not reminding them.

    Good luck

  • Good luck with the colonoscopy Bex.  I totally agree that the prep I’ve had tasted vile.  Twice I’ve had Moviprep and remember just staring at it when I was only half way through and thinking you’ve got to be kidding me.  I alternated between that and drinking water and it certainly helped.  I can’t remember the prep I had before the surgery, it wasn’t as shall we say ‘extreme’ as the Moviprep but somehow they managed to make it taste worse…..quite the achievement but again having a bottle of water at the same time helped.

  • I am on a Facebook group for people with Lynch syndrome who have a high chance of getting bowel cancer and therefore have more colonoscopies. A lot of them recommend mixing the prep with coke zero to help the taste (flat to avoid it spilling)
