Good morning,

Yesterday I met my oncologist for the first time, I have signed the paperwork for 3 months of CAPOX, this should start early January but I don’t have a date yet. I have had bloods taken ready.

During the appointment I was told I should never eat cereal again unless is porridge or shredded wheat. What other foods should I avoid?

  • Hi glad you are getting on with your treatment.

Cant comment on the diet as wondering the reasons behind the cereal ban .

Do you have a stoma or perhaps other health issues ?

If you could explain a little more it may help others to tell you how they managed.

    All the best

  • Hi  I’ve not heard of certain foods being banned so wondering the reason for this suggestion? I know a low fibre/residue diet is often recommended as it’s easy to digest and not too harsh on the bowel. If it is low residue then I can send you some links but I was always allowed cornflakes and rice crispies when I was in hospital?

    Take care

  • Thank you for the reply.

I have no other health issues. Maybe it’s just my oncologist that believes cereal is bad for the gut.

I had an emergency right hemicolectomy on 13/11/23 due to appendicitis and a tumour in the caecum. Surgery was successful, no stoma needed. Up until now I have not been on a restricted diet. He told me yesterday that I need to drink kombucha and nuts daily but to never eat cereal again as it’s bad for the gut. Maybe that’s just his opinion.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I actually have no idea but the links would be great. He told me I need to drink kombucha and eat nuts daily and he will talk to be about diet later. This is all new to me, 6 weeks ago I didn’t even know I had a tumour! I was also allowed cereal in  hospital and I ate loads of it!

  • Hi  As you say, maybe it’s just his opinion? Low residue tends to be recommended before and a few weeks after surgery but it’s not the healthiest and is often referred to as the beige diet so if you’ve not been advised to follow it then it’s maybe not necessary.

Kombucha is supposed to be good for gut bacteria and nuts have been found to be good for bowel cancer

  • Thank you. No it’s definitely not a special diet like that. I’m hoping it’s just an opinion as I love cereal!
The second link was very informative.
