Hi all. I've told that I need Chemo, so Thursday 30 November had a PICC line inserted up to today I've had shooting pains where PICC inserted it's like an electric shock depending on how I move my arm, is this to be expected or is something not right?. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hi gordonthegolfer

I had chemo but did not have a picc line- mine was done via cannula.

However this does sound like it needs checking especially as it has only recently been put in. It may well be a normal thing but it would be worth getting some reassurance.

Have you got a CNS you could call for advice?

Or alternatively give NHS111 a call and get assessed?

Alternatively give the Support Line a call and speak to one of the nurses for some reassurance and some advice.

The number is at the end of this.

    Hope this helps

    Jane

  • Hi Gordonthegolfer

I had a PICC line fitted for my FOLFOX chemo in January 2022 following surgery in November 2021.

It did take about a week for the line to settle down and initially I had shooting pains when I moved my arm in certain positions.

Apparently the line is secured internally with a number of ‘fish-hook-like’ barbs to stop the line working loose and these take while to bed in.

After this initial irritation I had no problems with the line and hardly knew it was there for the next 7 months.

I’d give your care team a call if things have not settled down in the next few days.

  • Thank you very much for your thoughts. Have an absolutely brilliant Christmas and a even better New Year
