End of Chemo

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get a little bit of advice, my husband was diagnosed with Bowel cancer in June, he has had 5 1/2 weeks of Chemoradiotherapy, just finished a 3 months chemo IV and chemo tablets.

The Chemoradiotherapy was awful, although he managed to get through it all.

The Chemo was ok for the first 3 lots just a little bit of pins and needles and feeling the cold all of the time. The last one was 7th November and he has been awful, being sick, diarrhea, he ended up on antibiotics as he had a bad cold. He finished his tablets yesterday and today he is the worst he has been.

Can anybody tell me is this normal? His temperature is fine he is just exhausted and just wants to sleep.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks Kell

  • Hello Kell Sug

I am really sorry to hear that your husband has been so unwell since his last chemo.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to call his CNS/or GP and get some reassurance. I expect he was given a 24hour number to call when he started the chemo- maybe give that a call?

I personally found that my chemo did accumulate each time and I did feel pretty exhausted by the end of it- however when my bloods were checked there were some problems with my haemoglobin, magnesium. I needed a blood transfusion that really helped.

I hope he is feeling much better soon

  • Hi  . Yes I would give his 24 hour chemo line a ring. As Jane says the side effects are cumulative and it may be a combination of him being under the weather from his  cold and the fatigue but I would seek medical advice - chemo lowers the white cell count so it’s important to rule out more serious conditions such as sepsis?

Please let us know how you get on?

    Take care
