Might be in denial

Hi, I’m not the one affected directly but I’m posting here because today I found out that someone I knew has been diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer spread to the lungs. We used to be in touch then we stopped talking and we spoke again briefly today because of this. I am hurt by this, so hurt I cried for an hour straight a bit earlier and had suicidal thoughts (now gone). I didn’t take it well and I’m still here thinking about it, unable to sleep.
I am so much into denial that there’s a part of me who think he’s lying. He said he was diagnosed in February 2022 and he was given 5 years to live. He was already stage 4 when he was diagnosed and the only symptom he had was worsening lower back pain, nothing else. He’s 41 years old.
Sorry I’m only writing because I’m devastated and don’t have anyone to talk to about this

  • Hi @Sabrinas84 and I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling over your friends diagnosis. BOwen  cancer with metastasis (spread) can still have a lot treatment options available and there are people living with cancer (not dying from cancer) 5 years and beyond.

Its difficult to comment on your friends diagnosis but I would like to think it’s not something that’s been made up? Your friend may have held back from confiding in you knowing that it would distress you?  Please try and bear in mind that thoughts are not facts and try not to overthink things - bowel cancer has several different symptoms so please don’t doubt his diagnosis?

Hopefully you will be able to reach out to your friend and offer support and don’t  forget that the Macmillan support desk is available 7 days a week from 8-8 and also the Samaritans 24/7?

    Take care

    Karen x
